Australia joins the 21st century with Quentin Bryce

Published by Susanna Duffy at 10:31 am under Our People

Australia showed disturbing signs yesterday of moving into the 21st century.

Australia’s 25th governor-general is Quentin Bryce, prominent lawyer, academic and womens’ activist. Her appointment ends 107 years of male dominated tradition.

The state of Queensland has historically been noted as no country for women, old or young. Especially under former Premier, Joh Bjelke-Petersen.

Joh saw sex discrimination as further proof that the rest of Australia had turned socialist yet, while he was in power, Quentin Bryce who became the first woman appointed to Queensland University’s law faculty in 1965, established the Women’s Information Service in Brisbane (1984) was appointed Queensland director of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (1987) and became the sex discrimination commissioner on the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (1989)

Congratulations to Bryce who culminates a spectacular five-decade long career as a trailblazer, to become Australia’s first female governor-general.

Like to shout me a cold beer?
