Buchan Caves Reserve
Buchan Caves Reserve is home to many native animals, such as the Eastern Grey Kangaroo, and more than 60 species of birds. The Reserve sees thousands of visitors each year, most of whom have come for the underground attractions. For the area is honeycombed with spectacular limestone caves.
The Buchan Caves were formed by underground rivers cutting through limestone rock, and the formations created by rain water seeping through cracks and dissolving some of this limestone. Over time, stalactites are formed on the roof of the cave, and stalagmites build up from droplets which fall to the floor. Some caves have beautiful calcite-rimmed pools.
The caves are perfectly safe, with guided tours through lighted area with concrete pathways. You can take the kids, but most pathways are inaccessible to wheelchairs.
Tour Times
From Easter School to September, there are 3 tours daily and in the warmer months from October to Easter, there are 5 tours daily.
During school holidays, there are also special cave tours for small groups, which involve donning a miners helmet and venturing into less frequented caves. Not recommended for younger children.
Camp in the Reserve
Stay overnight in one of the many motel and cabins, fully self-contained units, or camp in a powered site. Buchan gets most visitors in the summer months and if you’re thinking of staying over during the Christmas holidays, make sure that you book ahead.
The Reserve has more than just the caves and the native animals, there’s a swimming pool, a playground for the little ones, a picnic ground with toilets, and some excellent walking tracks. More information is available at the Visitor Information and Interpretation Centre.
All in all, it’s an affordable family-orientated adventure. No fancy flashy attractions, no five star accomodation, just clean air and simple living. The type of holiday that I remember from my childhood.
For bookings call the Parks Victoria on 13 1963.
